For one, Traffic. We all hate it, but most don't realize that is is frequently caused by our own selfish decisions. For example, you are in the middle lane and are about to miss an exit on the highway. You cut off a guy in the right lane to get over, and he slams on his brakes, causing a chain reaction that can easily result in significant delays. There are huge economic savings for the community if that person can put the community's interest ahead of their own and take the next turn. There are many more examples of how we can work together to reduce traffic inefficiencies, and they are even supported by empirical research suggesting that basic changes in the way we drive can result in huge improvements that we can all enjoy.
Not to mention a nationwide high-speed rail system! I think a key part of such a system would be to have freight capacity, so that 53-footers aren't mindlessly driving thousands of miles when they could be unmanned except for the last miles. If you were to give me (in Portland, OR) a rail line that could get me to Vegas in 6 hours (with a nappable/partyable space on the train), the world would be a different place. And if freight were included on the new rail lines, it would actually bring the joy back to driving as the roads wouldn't have to be clogged with big trucks just passing through.
Which reminds me: if there is a traffic jam, all trucks should be forced to be in the right lane and not allowed to pass. Slow trucks, trying to go from 54mph to 55mph will try to pass the 54mph truck and slow down 200 cars doing 70, if not causing a full-on jam. Again, let's all make a sacrifice so that the community gets through it better!
