unless there's another way to have a search return what a bunch of other searches return?
found_by: querythatfindssearchcards ? I think that works.

yeah, you can't use virtual cards there. In general, WQL just (a) generates SQL, (b) runs it, and then (c) massages results. Anything that involves lots of magic nested deep within the SQL is going to be hard to pull off, and even harder to pull off efficiently.
