optimize pointers

we just stopped caching pointers (because of not respecting item views) and are expecting that they may be a slow spot now.  We should be able to make them faster without having the item issues.

 

 

 

this is a relic of an older caching system.  we're not caching any rendered card content now, and while we want to do lots of general optimizations, pointers aren't really a prime target.
