We are getting larger numbers of registrations by users with random names. Is there a way to keep these from happening?

Turn on captcha.

 

Quickest way is just to do it on your *all+captcha card, which will turn it on for anything that an un-signed-in user can create or edit (which in many wagns is just the account request)
