This looks to be another hash cloning issue. Through the console I found that the above with "right_plus" works as expected and left_plus returns nothing (as it should). However, "left_plus"=> "tag" returns *right. So presumably the refer_to is not getting processed for the left side.

it was a cloning issue. fairly straightforward; kinda embarrassed I didn't see it last time. fixed
