Hi! I want to create a wiki to organise my notes, as well as those of my peers. Invite me please?

Thanks!

Erica

Hi Erica,

Were you able to find everything about Wagn that you needed to decide whether it might be of use to you?

Hi Ethan,

I have yet to explore enough (I am a busy student). I am not sure yet if it fits my specific needs. Thanks for checking up on me!

Erica

I have a lot of questions, but I don't know where to start.

Maybe start by describing the web tool that you're hoping to find. Then I'll tell you whether it sounds like Wagn might be a decent match.

I have written out my wish list three times, it has been deleted before it was posted!

So I will write small amounts and them post to avoid it happening again!

Here goes:

I want a tool for myself and my peers in naturopathic medicine to create a reference manual for treatment of health conditions.

  --Erica Kubanek.....Wed Mar 03 10:20:58 -0800 2010

I want to have hundreds of pages for health conditions. Each one will follow a certain template and will have several headings so that they all contain a minimal amount of information. Each heading will be anchored to the top of the page.

  --Erica Kubanek.....Wed Mar 03 10:22:37 -0800 2010

I want to have different templates for other types of pages like: plant medicines, homeopathic medicines, acupuncture points, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, etc. - correction to last post: 'so that they all contain at least a minimal amount of information on each subheading'

  --Erica Kubanek.....Wed Mar 03 10:25:18 -0800 2010

I need to have this medical information secure, only open to members that are naturopathic doctors or students. They should be able to add information, make new templates for different categories, discuss changes in pages, look at previous edits of pages.

  --Erica Kubanek.....Wed Mar 03 10:29:03 -0800 2010

How does that sound?

  --Erica Kubanek.....Wed Mar 03 10:29:38 -0800 2010

hi Erica,

Sorry you lost some text on that save; that's a bug with commenting -- sometimes double-clicking reloads the comment box. We're hoping to fix that this week, actually, but for now you might want to try clicking the edit button on the green bar that says "+wiki". Then you can edit your comments and write as much as you like.

Re your tool: so far so good. Wagn is very good at templated pages. If you want to read about how that works with wagn, the best documentation we have so far is on the structure pages.

  --Ethan McCutchen.....Wed Mar 03 10:31:00 -0800 2010

Oh, one more: I want the information to be well referenced, and references to be linked to the footnotes.

  --Erica Kubanek.....Wed Mar 03 10:31:32 -0800 2010

ah, now you've added a few more comments. The only part that might be moderately tricky is having colleagues make templates for new categories. That's technically very easy to set up, actually, but it's not yet super easy to learn how to build templates. If your colleagues are willing to learn a little, then no problem. Ultimately we want to add a lot more interface to template-building so it's much easier to do, but for now I don't want to leave you with the impression that it's a super simple process. It means having to learn a little syntax like this:

etc.

Users being able to set up templates is not at all essential.

I also want to good search, though I don't really know what 'good' means here, but what will give this reference manual its power is to search a keyword, the best results for that keyword will show up on top, and then when you go to the page, you are linked up to all of the treatment options (which includes pertinent information for interactions, dosage etc.), other potential conditions link to the one searched etc etc etc.

I have a model built that is a stand alone wiki and it works great (I made it on Voodoopad), but I am only one person and the power of this manual is impossible to share as-is. What do you think?

  --Erica Kubanek.....Wed Mar 03 10:51:11 -0800 2010

I have built a model wiki (on voodoopad) which is stand alone. The power of this manual is being able to search while you type, have each page linked to its title in any page and being able have important diagnosis and CURRENT and RELEVENT treatment information at you finger tips. The users being able to define what is important, current and relevant is also powerful. Over all, what do you think?

  --Erica Kubanek.....Wed Mar 03 10:59:53 -0800 2010

(oops, the redundancy is because I thought the last comment was deleted again!!)

On another note: this is currently a one woman show, a poor student one woman show... although I have interested users, I don't have anyone committed to help. Comments?

  --Erica Kubanek.....Wed Mar 03 11:01:48 -0800 2010

I don't know much about voodoopad, but given the things that you're trying to accomplish, I would certainly say it sounds like something in the "structured wiki" camp, because you're not just trying to set up free-form pages, you're going for patterns.

As for building community, it definitely takes a "wiki champion", someone who not only writes content but spurs others, watches over the recent changes, validates, etc. It can be a real chicken-and-egg battle, because people only take interest when you've got great content, and it usually takes a lot of help to get great content.

I guess my main comment would be that you can make this fly if you're really committed, but wikis aren't a simple "if you build it they will come" proposition. Gotta have the love :)

  --Ethan McCutchen.....Wed Mar 03 14:52:44 -0800 2010

Like I said - this would be important to build not only for myself, but also for my peers. Currently, I have alot of conditions that are well referenced (this has been assignment work that is appropriate for treatment purposes) and I also feel like this is a POWERFUL way to communicate information and effective treatment among naturopaths in such a way that doesn't yet exist.

  --Erica Kubanek.....Wed Mar 03 15:18:21 -0800 2010

So my greater vision is that I have several people interested while we are in school, and once I graduate (in two years) we have a start and I can market it to practicing doctors. I know there is already an online community of NDs that communicate on chat groups and they exchange treatment information or clinical pearls of information. But I envision the chatted information to have a HOME so that it is more accessible to EVERY practicing ND. Anyways, that is my vision, and I feel like WAGN can fill it. I guess I don't need to convince you of the need and power of my vision, but hey, I get carried away :)

My next question is: how much help do you figure we need, ie: what monthly package do I need to get (and whether I need to start looking for a sponsor :-
