This problem itself is solved, and now when I click on a setting, e.g. *read, it opens up as expected. When I double-click on "type:Pointer" or some places near "Anyone" I get:

hmm, I think for now I just might take the double click behavior away from this one. Now that you have permissions, you'll see that as soon as you open the rule you're in edit mode if you're allowed to edit.

btw, the font changing happens when the server displays these full errors (I switched it to do that while we're testing).
